The Art of Calligraphy With Judy Broad

Calligraphy; an exquisite art form whose name is derived from the Greek words for “beauty” (kallos) and “to write” (graphein) is not only an expression of one’s creativity but is also a welcomed escape from the stresses of daily life.

Judy Broad is a Surrey-based, highly accomplished calligrapher on a mission to share her passion for visual art, to encourage aspiring artists, and to share her knowledge of the craft.

We sat down with Judy on a wet October afternoon via Zoom for an hour in which the calligrapher spoke about her craft with visible ardor, shedding light on her prestigious collaborations with the likes of Chanel, Christian Dior, Harrods, and Gee Brothers, detailing the therapeutic benefits of her new online course and the most effective steps to take when starting up a small business.

What is your personal history with Calligraphy – why does the art form interest you?

I was introduced to calligraphy at quite a young age when I was at school. I had loved everything about the art form but sadly along the way of moving through school, university, and getting married, time became more of a commodity and I stopped being able to practice. A few years ago, though, my niece asked me if I “still did that fancy writing” and if I did, could I possibly dig out my tools and write her wedding invitations.

It was creating the invitations that really reminded me how much I loved the art and I did wonder why I had let it fall by the wayside. It’s a vocation that provides a tranquil haven from the busy world outside, a somewhat meditative space in which I can withdraw, albeit for a time.

How did you then start up a business in 2013?

Referrals formed the stepping stones for my subsequent success with launching a small business. One of my daughters helped me out with setting up my Instagram account and ever since I have been designing wedding place cards and invitations, working with myriad corporate clients on exciting design briefs, and conducting tailored workshops. It’s been a wonderful journey so far.

Can you tell us a little bit about the brands you’ve worked with?

Yes, I’ve had the absolute pleasure of working with some lovely brands such as Chanel, Harrods, Christian Dior, and Aspinal of London. My work for these prestigious brands may involve me writing a handwritten note to be attached to and sent out with new products to influencers and bloggers.

Also, along with a handful of other calligraphers, I spend time in some Chanel stores personalising gift tags, Christmas cards and also conducting popup workshops taking place in-store as well. People really love that personal touch calligraphy adds to any item and so it fits in really well with Chanel as a brand.

I’ve also recently collaborated with bespoke stationers, Gee Brothers. We’ve created beautiful Christmas cards together which launched mid-October and features bright contrasting colours with gold and silver foiling. Really eyecatching and a unique addition to any gift idea!

You’ll be launching an online course imminently, as well?

With the advent of COVID-19 and the restrictions imposed, and now as we move into a second lockdown, running my in-person workshops have been challenging but it will be the first time I’ve taken my teaching digital. It’s a very exciting project I’ve been working on called ‘Let’s Learn Modern Calligraphy’.

People were inquiring if I would do online courses and so here we are! I’ve curated a variety of interactive step-by-step videos, worksheets, and little projects to complete along the way to make it a bit more challenging. As I can’t conduct the course in person, I have ensured it’s much easier for students to take the course on their own and also at their leisure so they won’t be pressed for time.

Calligraphy is a very creative art form, which the learned artist can often manipulate to create a signature style. Whereas, the more traditional form provides less of a creative edge but creates a surer hand in the art. Which style will you be tutoring on your course?

I encourage my students to be as creative as they can. The traditional style is much harder to master and so on my course, a uniquely creative edge is always encouraged. Aspiring calligraphers are also able to really get a sense of the versatility of the art from just one morning when at my in-person workshops and are able to take away a foundational knowledge and capability to be a great calligrapher. After taking my online course, the art of calligraphy will be much less of an enigma to a beginner!

Judy, can you share a few tips with aspiring amateur calligraphers who will be taking your course.

I think the old adage ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ is an apt saying for those just starting out on their calligraphy journey. Sink your teeth into the fundamentals of the art and build on the knowledge and techniques, take your time, and really enjoy the process.

Mix up the way you learn: rather than practicing the same letters repeatedly, write in coloured ink or write out the lyrics of your favourite song. After you’ve mastered the art, use your newfound talent. Chances are, no one else you know will be able to write as beautifully as you can!

And how would one go about setting up a little business should they want to monetize their newfound hobby?

If someone is looking to start their own calligraphy business, my number one tip would be to learn your craft. My calligraphy course will ensure that you have a sound knowledge and understanding of what is involved to learn this modern art-form.

With over a hundred pages of worksheets coupled with comprehensive step-by-step videos you will be well on the way to learning your craft. With the skills nailed you’ll have the confidence in your abilities to develop your own style and take your calligraphy further. I have taught several students who are now running their own calligraphy studios.

Lastly, could you recall some of the most meaningful projects you’ve worked on?

Well, I’ve been lucky enough over the years to have worked on some wonderful design briefs. One of my most meaningful and memorable projects was being successful in my 2018/19 Waitrose and Partners Christmas campaign. My calligraphy was featured on all their Christmas products, in-store point of sale, and merchandising. It was a particularly meaningful moment the first time I saw everything on display in my local Waitrose! It was definitely a Waitrose Christmas!
