Old Ambulance Station to house new sculpture in Bexhill

A relatively new space for emerging artists has opened in Bexhill-on-Sea.

Originally a hub to house tired emergency workers between call-outs, the space will continue to help people on their journeys, this time aiding artists create their masterpieces at affordable workshop rates.

The workshop spaces have been purposefully re-designed to facilitate an area for eleven artists, in a creative and collaborative working environment.

On Saturday, 22nd April, an afternoon event will take place to mark the first public display on site of the monumental bronze sculpture entitled Excalibre 7.62 by local South African artist Steven Gregory.

A new piece of public art will be going on display at the Old Ambulance Station in Beeching Road, Bexhill.

Gregory will give a talk at the station at 3.30 pm.

The converted building was purchased by Richard Upton in 2020 to provide local artists with affordable rented workshops in East Sussex.

As part of the arrangement, each artist gives one hour a week of volunteering in the community and will be in attendance on the day. Resident blacksmith and workspace coordinator Ben Wood will also open his workshop to visitors.
