Unveiled: Mandarin Oriental's New Uniforms Blend Tradition and Modernity

Nestled in historic Hanover Square, Mandarin Oriental Mayfair stands in one of London's most in vogue neighbourhoods, serving as a crossroads for fashion, media, art, and business. The design-focused hotel features a sleek aesthetic that reflects its rich Asian heritage, apparent in both its interior styling and staff attire.

Under the creative direction of Nicholas Oakwell and in collaboration with General Manager Susanne Hatje, the new hotel uniforms have been designed to be functionally elegant.

Nicholas Oakwell, Creative Director of NO Uniform, a global leader in bespoke uniform design, crafted uniforms that merge classic British tailoring with Asian influences.

Features like cherry blossom embroidery and kimono-inspired sleeves for bartenders’ bomber jacket-styled shirts showcase this fusion. The result is a distinctive, modern aesthetic that respects the hotel’s surroundings while honouring its Asian roots.

The uniforms emphasise sustainability, using British suiting fabrics and local manufacturing, and prioritising comfort and functionality for the staff, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment.

The hotel's design is the work of internationally renowned RSHP, known for iconic buildings like the Lloyd’s building and the Pompidou Centre. Located on Mayfair’s oldest square, the hotel embraces its historic context.

Tokyo-based studio Curiosity designed the public spaces, inspired by a "hub of nature and art" concept, featuring local British artworks and unique furniture pieces curated by founder Gwenael Nicolas. The 50 guest rooms and suites, designed by UK-based Studio Indigo, reflect British style with touches of oriental heritage, perfectly blending with the iconic London location.
